Hugh Grant’s screen charisma carries this routine romantic comedy about a washed-up Hollywood screenwriter who grudgingly accepts a teaching post at an East Coast college.
The caddish chap sleeps with one of his students before he’s even taught his first class, but Grant’s bumbling, fumbling charm convinces us that he is worth redemption. Marisa Tomei’s mature student/single mom provides a more age-appropriate love interest for the hero than flirtatious co-ed Bella Heathcote, while Allison Janney supplies withering put-downs as a disapproving faculty member.
This is the fourth time Grant has worked with writer-director Marc Lawrence, following Two Weeks Notice, Music and Lyrics and Did You Hear About the Morgans? and once again it’s his impeccable comic timing that makes the most of a patchy script.
