This fact-based drama follows a group of Siberian gulag prisoners, including Ed Harris and Jim Sturgess, making a bid for freedom.

Director Peter Weir’s film is as gruelling as it is uplifting as the group make their perilous, 4,000-mile journey across a spectacular landscape of snowscapes, deserts and mountains to India.

Sturgess is excellent as the central character and a haggard Harris outstanding as the sole American, while Saoirse Ronan quietly impresses as a girl they meet along the way.

Colin Farrell and Mark Strong make strong impressions, too, though exit the movie too early.
