Dr Zosia March is thrilled when boss Jac Naylor offers her the chance to advance her career by going on a six-month work placement… in America! Although it will mean putting her wedding to fellow medic Oliver Valentine on hold, Zosia’s put at ease when both her husband-to-be and her dad, neurosurgeon Guy, encourage her to go to the States.
Zosia grows concerned about her dad, though, as he seems exhausted and repeatedly makes mistakes as he cares for his patient, Kayleigh, who has a brain aneurysm. Guy claims he’s just tired but, when he almost makes a catastrophic error while operating on Kayleigh, Zosia is forced to confront him.
Having left Holby eight months ago in emotional distress, Guy confides in Zosia that he was only allowed to return to work at the hospital if he agreed to Nina Karnik’s order that he’d see a psychotherapist. Guy admits he’s still struggling to move on from events in his past.
Zosia fears Guy didn’t want to tell her about his problems, so that she wouldn’t turn down the chance of going to America. Will Zosia decide to pursue her ambitions – or put the needs of her family first?
Meanwhile, on his final day on AAU before heading back to Darwin, Oliver’s preoccupied with his late wife Tara’s brain scans and seeks a second opinion, fearing something could have been done to prevent her death four years ago. After Ric refuses to perform a precautionary scan on Ollie’s patient, Ollie questions the boundaries of negligence. Can Ollie move on from the past?
Also, when Dominic starts behaving secretively, Lofty wonders if he still harbours feelings for him after Dom tried to kiss him the other week. As his personal embarrassment gets in the way of treating a patient, Lofty does some soul-searching. Is he still struggling with letting Dom down gently? Or does he care more for him than he realises?
