In this upbeat sports romance, Keira Knightley and Parminder Nagra play two teenage girls who bond over their passion for playing football while struggling to overcome family disapproval. But their friendship is threatened by another shared passion – a secret love for their handsome coach.

This wasn’t the original story though. In the first version of this film, the secret love threatening the girls’ friendship wasn’t a love for their coach, but a love for each other.

But, since the film was already challenging convention by addressing the cultural struggle of a Sikh girl involved in a traditionally male sport, director Gurinder Chadha decided that a same sex romance might have been too much for many conservative Indian audiences. So she re-wrote the script. Nevertheless, the movie still manages to challenge homophobia a little, as well as the role of women in society.

Bend It Like Beckham is showing tonight – Tuesday 17th July – on Sky Movies Drama/Romance at 6pm
