We want you to tell us which was 2011′s best animated film – and help decide the winner of the Animation category in this year’s Richard Attenborough Film Awards. You can cast your vote on the Animated Film of the Year website but to help you make up your mind we’re posting brief reviews of the 10 nominated films over the next 10 days, starting with Rango.

Johnny Depp discovers it’s not easy being a chameleon especially when you find yourself trapped in a hilarious – and somewhat off-the-wall – Spaghetti Western spoof. Bill Nighy’s villainous rattlesnake, Isla Fischer’s feisty lizard heroine and Ned Beatty’s treacherous tortoise mayor add to the zany shenanigans in a quick-draw CGI comedy which combines its star voice cast with a sharp-shooting script to brilliant effect. Exhausting but worth it, especially for young guns with a taste for the absurd, and old sidewinders who know a clever parody of 1970s Jack Nicholson classic Chinatown when they see one.

Released on DVD & Blu-ray by Paramount Home Entertainment.
