The Handmaiden

From Oldboy and Stoker director Park Chan-wook comes the sumptuous, suspense thriller, The Handmaiden, inspired by Sarah Waters’ best-selling novel Fingersmith.

Set during the Japanese occupation of Korea in the 1930s, it centres on Sookee (Kim Tae-ri), who is hired as a handmaiden by Hideko (Kim Min-hee), a reclusive heiress living under the watchful eye of her domineering uncle, Kouzuki (Cho Jin- woong). But Sookee is actually a pickpocket, recruited by Fujiwara (Ha Jung-woo), a scheming con artist, to trick Hideko into entrusting him with her fortune. However, when Sookee and Hideko fall for each other, they start putting together a plan of their own…

The Handmaiden is out now in its theatrical and extended cut (featuring 22 minutes of never-seen-before footage) versions by Curzon Artificial Eye on DVD and Blu-ray, with a Special Edition Blu-ray featuring a host of extras, including a ‘making of’ featurette and an interview with the director.
