This intelligently spare US indie thriller delivers a gripping depiction of suspicion and paranoia in a post-apocalyptic near-future America.

It Comes at Night

Set in a post-apocalyptic near-future America, gripping, intelligently spare US indie thriller It Comes at Night gives us an end-of-the-world narrative unlike most other movies in the genre. There are no zombies here, nor any rampaging mobs, just two families uneasily holed up together in a remote forest house.

Even so, writer-director Trey Edwards Shults creates slow-burning tension and menace as husband and wife Joel Edgerton and Carmen Ejogo, and their teenage son (Kelvin Harrison Jr) uneasily share their refuge with strangers Christopher Abbott and Riley Keough and their young son. Outside is a mysterious epidemic (we never learn the details), but inside, paranoia and suspicion turn out to be just as dangerous.
