Trapped at home in rural Norfolk for the long, hot summer, a gawky 16-year-old school-leaver (newcomer Liam Walpole) yearns to break free in atmospheric coming-of-age drama The Goob. He is devoted to his mum (Sienna Guillory), who runs a roadside diner, but finds himself dangerously at odds with her vicious, bullying boyfriend (Sean Harris), a local stock-car racing champion. The arrival of the season’s fruit-pickers brings things to a head. First-time writer-director Guy Myhill is stronger on mood than plot, but he makes suggestive use of the wide-open Fenland landscape and gets striking performances from his cast.
