Channel 4 named Channel Of The Year

Channel 4 has been named Channel Of The Year at the Edinburgh International TV Festival's annual awards ceremony.

Other winners at the awards, now in their ninth year, included BBC One sitcom Outnumbered which won the Terrestrial Programme Of The Year prize, and E4 sitcom The Inbetweeners which was voted non-terrestrial Programme Of The Year.

BBC3 won the award for Non-Terrestrial Channel Of The Year.

"We are completely delighted and it's a testament to all the hard work that everyone has put into making Channel 4 such a special and different and important place," said the channel's acting chief creative officer Julian Bellamy.

"I think Channel 4 is entering a new era in a world where we are saying goodbye to the amazing show, Big Brother, and saying hello to a completely new era. It is, I think, one of the most exciting moments in the channel's history."

The winners are decided by a combination of a festival committee and a public vote.
