Doctor Who is Edinburgh winner

Doctor Who has triumphed at this year's Edinburgh TV Festival, being named Best Programme, while BBC One was voted Terrestrial Channel of The Year.

The sci-fi show beat competition from fellow BBC One shows Life On Mars and Planet Earth as well as the E4 drama Skins.

ITV2 was named best digital channel, ahead of nominees BBC Three, BBC Four More4, Sky One and UKTV Gold.

Doctor Who was chosen as the Best Programme winner by 200 young people, who were invited to the festival as a way of showcasing up and coming TV talent.

"To receive the award from young people coming into the industry is a particular honour," said the show's producer Phil Collinson.

He also praised the BBC. "Without it Doctor Who would never be made, would never be so good and never be so well supported."

Comedienne Catherine Tate will be joining David Tennant in the fourth series of the show as his new companion Donna Noble. Tate originally played the role in the 2006 Christmas special.

This year's Christmas special will be set aboard the Titanic and will feature a guest appearance from Kylie Minogue.
