Coronation Street actress Julie Hesmondhalgh is to take a year off from the ITV1 soap, according to the papers.

The Mirror reports that the 37-year-old actress, who plays transexual Hayley Cropper, is exhausted, and wants to take a break to spend more time with her actor husband Ian Kershaw and their six-year-old daughter Martha.

"Julie approached producers about taking some time off and they were more than happy to agree because she's worked so hard for the show," a Corrie insider told the paper.

Her character will leave the show in an emotional farewell next month when she travels to Africa to help underprivileged children - but the door will be left open for her return.

"We had enough time to come up with a superb way to write her out for however long we need to," the source said.

"Viewers will miss her but we can assure them she'll be back."
