Red Chili Peppers sue Californication over title

US band The Red Hot Chili Peppers are suing a US TV network over the right to use the word Californication.

Showtime Networks has a controversial television series Californication, currently screening on Five int he UK, but it is also the name of the rock band's 1999 album and one of its singles.

The suit - which was filed in Los Angeles on Monday - seeks a permanent injunction barring Showtime and the other defendants from using the title Californication for the show, plus damages and restitution and disgorgement of all profits derived by the defendants.

The TV series stars X-Files actor David Duchovny as a novelist suffering from writers' block and a mid-life crisis, whose move to Los Angeles and job problems complicate his relationship with his ex-girlfriend.

The show also features a character named Dani California, which is also the title of a Red Hot Chili Peppers song released in 2006, according to the lawsuit.
