Edward Woodward guests in The Bill

Acting veteran Edward Woodward is to guest star in The Bill - appearing alongside his son and grandson for the first time ever.

RADA-trained Edward, best known for his role in the eighties crime drama The Equaliser, son Tim and grandson Sam will all feature in a two-part special of the ITV1 cop drama, due to be shown in April.

In the story, Edward plays notorious former gangster Johnnie Jackson, Tim is renowned criminal Rod Hutton (Johnnie's illegitimate son) while Sam plays Jacko Jackson, Johnnie's grandson.

In a case involving people trafficking, Sun Hill officers are called to investigate when Jacko is found murdered.

"It's been a fantastic opportunity for us all to work together in this way,” said Edward. "I've really enjoyed working with the cast and crew of The Bill – and who wouldn't?"

And it seems that the cast of The Bill are just as thrilled to have Edward on board.

Alex Walkinshaw - aka The Bill's Sergeant 'Smithy' - said: "I really enjoy performing with the variety of experienced and talented actors working on The Bill, and it’s always a real pleasure to work with iconic professionals such as Edward."

Catch The Bill every Wednesday and Thursday on ITV1 at 8pm.
