Dame Edna's bridesmaid Madge dies aged 100

Emily Perry, the actress who played Dame Edna Everage's long-suffering sidekick Madge Allsopp, has died at the age of 100.

BBC News online reports that Emily was 80 when she first took on the role as Dame Edna's bridesmaid in 1987.

Perry appeared on Dame Edna's ITV star-studded shows and travelled the world as part of comic Barry Humphries' stage spectaculars. As New Zealander Madge Allsop she was completely silent and poker-faced, and her main function was to affix badges to star guests and be the butt of Dame Edna's unkind comments.

In recent years she lived at Brinsworth House, a London retirement home for entertainers.

Devon-born Emily - who was known as Pat - ran a children's dancing school for 25 years before finding fame late in life.

Speaking to the BBC last year ahead of her 100th birthday, Emily said: "You know, my memory's gone. I've been all around the world with Barry, and I can't remember a thing."
