Gavin and Stacey triumphs at Baftas

BBC Three comedy Gavin and Stacey was among the big winners at this year's Bafta TV awards, which took place in London's West End on Sunday night.

The show scooped the audience award - which was voted for by the public - beating the likes of Strictly Come Dancing and Britain's Got Talent to the prize, while its star James Corden won the Bafta for Best Comedy Performance.

"That's ridiculous," said a clearly shocked Corden before going on to thank his family, as well as his co-star Ruth Jones.

"She is not just the greatest writer and actress, she is the best friend anyone could hope for, and I share this with her," he said.

It was also a good night for Harry Hill's TV Burp, which picked up two awards including Best Entertainment Programme, beating fellow nominees Britain's Got Talent, Strictly Come Dancing and Have I Got News For You.

Hill also won Best Entertainment Performance, beating Simon Amstell for Never Mind The Buzzcocks, Friday Night Project duo Alan Carr and Justin Lee Collins, and Stephen Fry for QI.

Despite being nominated for four awards, BBC1 costume drama Cranford came away with only one prize - Best Actress for Eileen Atkins, who beat co-star Judi Dench to the trophy.

"I don't do humility very well but I really do have to share this with the ladies of Cranford," she said in her speech. "They were a fantastic bunch of actresses and all of them were such terrific women as well."

And she was full of praise for Dench. "She really is as wonderful as you think she is," Atkins added. "I can't think of anything horrible to say about her at all. I wish I could."

Andrew Garfield was voted Best Actor for his role in Channel 4's Boy A, a drama about a juvenile child-killer.

Other winners on the night included Holby City, which beat rivals EastEnders, The Bill and Emmerdale to win the Best Continuing Drama Bafta, and BBC1's The Street which won Best Drama Series.

BBC2 hit Heroes won the International Show award ahead of Californication, Family Guy and My Name Is Earl. Elsewhere Peep Show was voted Best Situation Comedy, while Best Comedy Programme was won by Fonejacker.

There was also a special award for Bruce Forsyth. The veteran entertainer received a standing ovation as he took to the stage to receive his prestigious Bafta fellowship.

"A few golfing trophies will go and I will put this in its place," said Forsyth, who recently celebrated his 80th birthday. "I would not swap this for anything."
