I'd Do Anything: dream ends for Niamh
18/05/2008 - 20:02

Student Niamh became the eighth Nancy to be axed from I'd Do Anything after Andrew Lloyd Webber sent her home in Sunday's live show.
The 17-year-old from Northern Ireland had faced a tense sing-off with Rachel, but looked as if she knew her fate was sealed when Graham Norton revealed that she had polled the least viewer votes over the weekend.
Judges Barry Humphries and Denise Van Outen agreed: 'She's enchanting, but Niamh is not Nancy,' said Barry, while Denise felt the teenager was 'too young' for the part. On Saturday, Andrew had admitted that Niamh might not be able to sustain eight shows a week in the West End.
After the girls had delivered a note-perfect sing-off, Lord Lloyd Webber gave his verdict: 'Rachel, you handled it very well and you warmed in the song,' he said. 'This is the most difficult decision. Ultimately, I have to save Rachel.’
But there was high praise for the Northern Irish girl as he went on to predict a glittering future career. In fact he seemed to have a part in mind for her.
'If I was casting Evita, I would be seriously thinking of you for that role,' he gushed. 'You've got an incredible range. I just think you need a few years to mature. And I wouldn't be surprised if you're up for a major leading role by the time you're 20.'
Despite her disappointment, Niamh said she was thrilled to have taken part in the show. 'I'm a changed person,' she said afterwards. 'I want to take this opportunity to thank the panel and the production team, who are amazing - and most of all the Nancys, who I love.'
The four remaining contestants - Rachel, Samantha, Jodie and Jessie - now proceed to next Saturday's live semi-final as they continue in their bid to become Cameron Mackintosh's leading lady.
