Kate: Ulrika's not up to GMTV sofa job

Kate Garraway has launched an astonishing attack on her rival for the GMTV presenter's job by saying Ulrika Johnson lacks the right skills.

The Daily Mirror reports that Kate, who presents the morning breakfast show twice a week, publicly discredited Ulrika at a television awards ceremony after hearing that GMTV producers were considering her for the role.

"It's very unlikely she will get the job," said Kate. "She is not a journalist and the job needs someone that has those skills."

“Everyone else does,” she added.

Kate, who took part in Strictly Come Dancing in 2007, has also spoken out against current presenter Fiona Phillips.

She said: "It's sad for me that she is leaving, but I think it is good for the company. It is time for a change, time for a shake-up."

Fiona and Kate's relationship took a negative turn last month when Fiona accused her of going to the "opening of an envelope".

In the event that Kate is not offered the role, the presenter has vowed to remain at ITV.

She said: "I wasn't told Fiona was leaving in advance, but I know that is how these things work. I would really love the job, but I will stay on, whatever happens."

Kate says the job needs a 'real journalist'
