Grease: Wayne and Hayley on their feet

Wayne Smith and Hayley Clarke became the third couple to be voted off Grease Is The Word on Saturday night after what was described as a 'lacklustre' performance.

After weeks of being among the frontrunners in ITV1's search to find a Danny and Sandy to star in the West End revival of Grease, Wayne and Hayley failed to impress the judges with their performance of Footloose.

A disappointed David Ian told them: "This is the first week you haven't wowed me. It was ordinary."

Adding insult to injury, fellow judge Brian Friedman described their performance as: "Dry bread with no spread."

Viewers evidently agreed as Wayne and Hayley found themselves in the bottom two alongside sing-off veterans Bradley Clarkson and Michelle Antrobus, with both couples performing the Grease classic Summer Nights in a bid to save themselves from the chop.

But the judges had made up their minds and speaking on behalf of the panel, Ian said: "We've always said we're looking for a couple that can sing, dance and act; it's muscial theatre, it's not just a three-minute pop song. For that reason and that reason alone, this week, we're going to save Michelle and Bradley."

Talking to host Zoe Ball after learning that he would be leaving the competition, Wayne told her: "I felt like it was coming."

Earlier in the show, judge Ian had expressed concern that perhaps mistakes had been made in pairing up some of the couples.

Next week, the five remaining duos will sing live once more to prove that they have what it takes to play Danny and Sandy.
