Natalie Cassidy, who’s presenting The 5 O’Clock Show on C4 on Monday, June 14, talks about preparing for motherhood, play dates with Vincent Simone and a possible return to EastEnders…
So how do you feel about guest hosting The Five O’ Clock Show?
“I absolutely adored Paul’s show and I was on there a lot as a guest. I always used to joke and say, ‘If Paul’s ever ill or if he’s off on holiday, remember I’m around’, so I’m honoured that they’ve given me the opportunity. I just wish I was doing more than one!”
Do you see yourself doing more presenting in the future?
“Yes and this job is ever so important to me, because I really do like the idea of presenting and I don’t think it’s as easy as people think. It’s going to be my chance, my moment to get an hour’s show on a tape to say, ‘Look, I’d really like to be able to do this more often.'”
What sort of host will you be?
“The thing that people like about me is that I’m the girl next door and someone they can relate to. I’m just going to go out there, be myself and say, ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe it, look what I’m doing!'”
And one of your former EastEnders colleagues Tamzin Outhwaite is among the guests?
“I haven’t seen her in a long while, so I’m excited to have her on. I want it to come across like I’m at home with the person I’m interviewing and we’re just having a cup of tea and a bit of a gossip. My dream guest would be Ricky Gervais, I have total admiration for him.”
What about your other upcoming reality show on E4 Natalie Cassidy: Becoming Mum, which follows you through your pregnancy?
“It’s going to be really fun and glossy. I hope that people watch it and think that not all celebrities are mad! Obviously I do lead a celebrity lifestyle, I can’t help that. So yes, I do magazine shoots and yes, I bump into famous people who I know, but I want to show the other end of the scale which is me just being me with my family and my fiance.”
Has being pregnant changed your career outlook?
“Yes. I love my acting dearly, but I really want to be a hands-on mum and me going off touring in the theatre for four months round the country just isn’t going to happen. Maybe I’ll go back to it in the future, but for now I want to concentrate on looking after my baby.”
Are you still in contact with your Strictly Come Dancing partner – Vincent Simone?
“Vincent is gorgeous and I get on with him like a house on fire. Him and his girlfriend, Susan, and baby Luca are a lovely family to know. We still keep in touch so I hope we can arrange some play dates!”
Will you be watching the new series later in the year?
“Yes. I loved doing the show, but I did miss sitting on the sofa and watching the show as a fan. I can’t wait to just have my baby and watch it every Saturday. And obviously I’ll watch Claudia Winkleman on It Takes Two every night and see what shoes she’s wearing!”
You went back to Walford for Bianca’s wedding. Would you go back again?
“It’s down to circumstances, but I think if Sonia’s needed then I’d help them. People on the street still call out to me, ‘How’s Martin?’ or ‘Where’s your trumpet?’ It’s nice because people have grown up with that character and they obviously relate to her.”
So all in all it is an exciting time for you?
“I’m really pleased with what’s happening and really excited. I’m a very, very lucky girl, I’m having a lovely time and long may it continue.”
