Anna Friel is to star in a new ITV drama about an 11-year-old boy who takes the massive decision that he wants to live life as a girl.
The 41-year-old actress will play the boy’s mother, Vicky, who must decide what is best for her son Max and also how to protect him.
Her boy has always dressed as a girl at home, but now he doesn’t want to hide who he is.
And to complicate matters further, Vicky and Max’s father, Stephen, no longer live together, which puts extra pressure on Max who craves an idyllic home life.
Butterfly is billed as a “powerful family drama”. ITV’s Head of Drama, Polly Hill said: ““Butterfly is a beautiful story about a young boy on the cusp of puberty who doesn’t feel comfortable in his own body.”
Anna Friel, who first shot to fame in Brookside, recently starred in BBC1 drama, Broken. Anna will also be seen soon in the second series of ITV drama Marcella, in which she plays cop Marcella Backland. The first series of Marcella proved a hit when it was aired on ITV last year.
