Their unlikely friendship blossomed after Carla admitted the full extent of her health troubles.

It was a relationship many never saw coming – but Coronation Street viewers have fallen in love with Roy Cropper and Carla Connor’s friendship after they shared heartbreaking scenes in which Carla revealed she was suffering from kidney failure.

After returning to the cobbles over Christmas, Carla finally revealed in Friday night’s episode that she could die if she doesn’t get a kidney transplant.

In tender scenes outside the bistro, the pair formed an unlikely bond after Roy advised Carla that she needed to confide in her family, who are more than likely to be a match for a transplant.

However, after sharing a sweet hug before Carla headed back to the party and Roy headed home, he was later seen searching on his laptop, ‘how to donate a kidney’.

His act of kindness proved too much for viewers at home, who were already feeling teary over their heartfelt exchange.

Taking to Twitter, many praised Roy for his selfless actions, with one tweeting: ‘Roy wants to give Carla a kidney that’s so sweet! They really are friendship goals! #FriendshipGoals #Corrie’.

Another said: ‘Roy loves Carla like a daughter and Carla loves Roy like a dad and their scenes are always so emotional, today’s probably being the most. He would even donate a kidney to save her life. The most unlikely friendship, but the most genuine and raw.’

While a third shared sweet images of the pair.

Another said: ‘True friends like Roy and Carla in @itvcorrie melt my heart’ while another added: ‘I absolutely love Carla and roy’s relationship.’

A fellow fan of the show agreed, writing: ‘I hope Roy does donate a kidney to Carla. He couldn’t save Hayley, but he can save another woman who has meant the universe to him from certain death.’

Coronation Street returns on Monday at 7.30pm on ITV
