Douglas Henshall will reprise his role as dogged DI Jimmy Perez for a third outing of BBC1’s crime drama Shetland.

The series, which is based on author Ann Cleeves’ Shetland quartet of novels, has been recommissioned for a new six-part run and follows on from the successful second series, which finished on Tuesday night.

“Shetland is a really distinctive crime series that has proved hugely popular with audiences both here in Scotland and across the rest of the UK. I am thrilled it has been commissioned for a third outing and rest assured we have some really exciting plans for viewers from DI Perez and his team,” says Christopher Aird, the BBC’s Head of Drama Production Scotland.

The third series, set once more in and around the Shetland Islands, will be filmed next year.
