The rotten core at the heart of the Big Apple’s banking system is brilliantly exposed in Margin Call, a riveting all-star financial thriller about a fictional investment firm on Wall Street in 2008 that decides to dump its worthless stock before the markets find out.

Set during the ‘night of the long knives’ that brought the world to the brink of economic meltdown, and ‘inspired by real events’, writer-director JC Chandor‘s film takes aim at the greed and dishonesty of the US banking system and scores a direct hit. Despite many of the trappings of Oliver Stone’s Wall Street two-plus-decades before – right down to its jargon-filled script and Jeremy Irons‘s Gekko-style CEO – this is a much darker movie, for much darker times.

While the ruthless, amoral Irons and his chronies are the bad guys, erstwhile good guys such as Zachary Quinto‘s truth-seeking young analyst, Kevin Spacey‘s line manager, Demi Moore‘s lone female exec and Stanley Tucci‘s whistleblower are still implicated in the turmoil that ensues.

DVD and Blu-ray extras include a ‘Making of” documentary and deleted scenes.
