Jeff Stelling is returning to quiz mastering with a new ITV show, Alphabetical, four years after he quit hosting Countdown.

The Soccer Saturday frontman will present Alphabetical, which is billed as a ‘fast-paced quiz show,’ which sees three contestants compete against a returning champion in a series of games based around the alphabet.

“I’m thrilled to be back as a quiz-master fronting the brilliant Alphabetical for ITV,” said Jeff, who stepped down as Countdown host after two years in the hot seat in 2011.

“It’s one for the wordsmiths out there with no shortage of quick-fire questions. It’s high-tempo, exhilarating and I can’t wait for the viewers to see it.”

Over the course of four rounds the aim of the game is to build up as much time in the bank as possible.

After two contestants are eliminated, the remaining challenger will take on the reigning champion in a tense head-to-head where they make their way around the entire alphabet answering a question based on each letter.

They have just 100 seconds on the clock, plus any time they’ve built up. By successfully completing the alphabet the winner walks away with the jackpot. Or, if both contestants fail to achieve this, the jackpot rolls over.

The 10-part daytime show will be screened later this summer.
