Former Disney starlets Vanessa Hudgens) and (Selena Gomez shed their squeaky-clean images in Spring Breakers, a wild ride of a movie about four bored college students whose spring break in Florida becomes a headlong spree of sex and drugs and gangsta rap.

The duo throw themselves into their roles with giddy abandon, as does James Franco, who plays the outlandish rapper-cum-drug-dealer who leads the party-hearty quartet ((High School Musical’s Hudgens, The Wizards of Waverly Place’s Gomez, plus Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine) into ever more debauched and dangerous exploits.

Filming in eye-popping day-glo colours, director Harmony Korine gives the girls’ adventures a weird innocence. But his intentions remain unclear. Is he satirising or celebrating the heedless hedonism of American youth – or simply trying to shock by showing his cast of family-friendly stars getting up to no good?

Released on Blu-ray and DVD by Universal Pictures on Monday 12th August.
