Ricky Gervais has defended himself over the controversy surrounding his hosting of this year’s Golden Globes.

The comic, who came under fire for his near-the-knuckle remarks at Sunday’s event in Los Angeles, told Piers Morgan: “They hired me for a job, and if they didn’t want me, they shouldn’t have hired me. I don’t think I did anything wrong.”

Asked if he had intentionally ‘mocked’ stars including actors Robert Downey Jnr and Charlie Sheen, he insisted: “I’m not mocking them, I’m confronting the elephant in the room.”

It was reported on Thursday that Ricky would be reprising his David Brent character in the US version of The Office at the end of the month.
