Jo Brand has admitted she finds quiz shows such as Have I Got News For You and Mock The Week intimidating.

The 52-year-old told the Hay Festival in mid Wales: “The problem with Mock The Week is there are so many comics, three people on each team and Dara O’Briain.

“When there are so many of you vying to get your point across it is really hard. You have got to have the confidence to fight to get your point made.

“Sometimes you think, ‘This is a really brilliant line’, so you say it and everyone looks at you like you’re a murderer so you just sit there for the rest of the show.”

She described Have I Got News For You as ‘quite scary’, but said the exception is QI, hosted by Stephen Fry, which she said was a ‘bumbly’ kind of show.

Jo also addressed the question of why she has never appeared on Top Gear, despite holding a rally driving licence.

She said: “I am so competitive if I don’t beat Simon Cowell’s time I will kill myself. I can’t bear to go on and not beat it.

“I will do it, but possibly when I have got Alzheimer’s.”
