BBC One will premiere new Anglo-Irish crime drama Quirke at the end of May.

Adapted from the books by Benjamin Black (pseudonym of award-winning Irish writer John Banville), Gabriel Byrne is the Quirke of the title, chief pathologist of the Dublin morgue.

The BBC describes Quirke as a ‘charismatic loner’ who is ‘forced to confront the sins of his past’ as he discovers that the deaths he investigates are closely linked to his own life.

Byrne’s co-stars include Harry Potter’s Geraldine Somerville, Sara Stewart (Batman Begins) and Brian Gleeson (Snow White and the Huntsman).

Each of the three feature-length episodes is based on one of the books in the series.
