TV Times tops picks for tonight

What’s on telly tonight? Here the TV Times team of expert reviewers highlight the best shows on Tuesday 23rd January

The National Television Awards, 7.30pm, ITV

A host of stars will be descending on London’s O2 arena for British TV’s answer to the Oscars, hosted by Dermot O’Leary, with a special tribute to the late, great Sir Bruce Forsyth. The NTAs have named the Entertainment Award after him and Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, The Graham Norton Show, Celebrity Juice and All Round to Mrs Brown’s will battle it out for the gong. Expect fierce competition in the Crime Drama category and Drama Performance where David Tennant, Jenna Coleman, Suranne Jones, Sheridan Smith and Tom Hardy go head to head. But the big question is: will Ant & Dec win the Presenter award for the 17th year in a row? Rating: ****

Frankie Drake Mysteries, 9.00pm, Alibi

Frankie Drake is a fearless, motorbike-riding, gin-sipping female private detective, who isn’t afraid to challenge a few stereotypes and punch a few baddies in this Twenties-set crime drama. The first case for Frankie (Lauren Lee Smith) and partner Trudy (Chantel Riley) is to investigate the attempted kidnapping of a baby at an air show. Plane enthusiast Frankie is there to admire the amazing flying machines, but spots the tot being whisked away and sets off in hot pursuit on her motorbike. It’s a bit daft and obvious in places, but good old-fashioned fun nonetheless. Watch out for guest star Laurence Fox (Lewis) as dashing mechanic Greg Mills. Rating: ***

Inside No 9, times vary, BBC2

Harriet (Nicola Walker) thinks she might have married the most boring man in Britain. They’re about to renew their vows, but her husband Adrian (Steve Pemberton) is more interested in jigsaw puzzles and penny pinching than romance… and it doesn’t help that their relationship has been rocked by an indiscretion. As Harriet tries to rekindle their marriage, will she win the old stick-in-the-mud round? Tune in for the twist in the tale! Rating: *****
