The final of ITV1’s celebrity diving show Splash! was a hit with viewers on Saturday night – with overnight estimates showing it was the most watched programme of the evening.

According to the figures an average audience of 5.3m tuned in to see Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards crowned series champion over fellow finalists Jake Canuso and Linda Barker.

And the peak ratings rose to an impressive 6.5m – representing nearly a quarter of the TV viewing audience in its time slot.

The show was also the second most watched of the series behind the launch episode on January 5.

Splash! – which saw Tom Daley coaching 15 celebrities in the art of diving – was panned by the critics but proved to be a surprise hit with viewers, regularly pulling in audiences around the 5-6m mark.

Tom has already indicated he would be keen to take part in a second series if the show returns.

‘I’d love to be involved because it’s a show that I’ve really enjoyed doing and something that I’d love to do as long as I can,’ he said.

‘I’d love to think diving can stay on primetime TV for as long as possible because I think it’s something people can enjoy. The Olympics have really given the sports that don’t have as many people watching them a bit of a boost.’
