TV Times tops picks for tonight

What’s on telly tonight? Here the TV Times team of expert reviewers highlight the best shows on Saturday 6th January

Hard Sun, 9.35pm, BBC1

This “pre-apocalyptic thriller” gets off to an explosive start as enigmatic cop Elaine Renko (model and actor Agyness Deyn) is assaulted and left for dead. Written by Luther creator Neil Cross, the London-set thriller follows the uneasy relationship between Renko and new partner Hicks (Jim Sturgess) as they stumble across news of an extinction-level event that will wipe out life on Earth. Unfortunately, knowledge of this “Hard Sun” event is a death sentence in itself, and MI5 are soon pursuing the duo in a thrilling chase sequence. David Bowie’s Five Years – which inspired the tale – plays over the closing credits of a cracking opener to an intriguing series. Rating: ****

Wedding Day Winners, 7.25pm, BBC1

Wedding Day Winners Lorraine Kelly and Rob main

Lorraine Kelly and Rob Beckett are the hosts in this bold attempt to add TV pizzazz to a couple’s big day. Think The Generation Game in bridal gear, with competing couples undertaking stunts, games and high-adrenaline challenges to win a dream honeymoon and have their wedding broadcast to the nation. And all this in front of an audience of family and friends (plus a few wedding crashers) togged up in their best threads. Unlike C4’s 2015 wedding show Married at First Sight, here even the losers get prizes. Which should help avoid that British wedding staple – the punch-up. Rating: ****

Take Me Out, 7.00pm, ITV

Paddy McGuinness is playing Cupid once more as the popular dating show returns for its 10th – yes, 10th – series. With the all-new ‘Flirty Thirty’ ladies waiting to greet the single men willing to brave the Love Lift. All our ladies want to be whisked off to the sunny isle of Fernando’s – but the fellas must remember: “no likey, no lighty”. Ratings: ***
