Courteney Cox explores her family history in the first of a new eight-part series. The Friends star, raised in Alabama, knew little about her roots but was aware that her maternal grandfather Bruce Bass hailed from England. Courteney’s research brings her to Gloucestershire where she’s intrigued to learn that her ancestors were high-ranking nobles who would have had the ear of King Edward II. She is taken to Berkeley Castle, built by her 18-times great-grandfather, where she learns of a horrifying plot to overthrow the realm. ‘You think they make this stuff up in Game of Thrones,’ she says. ‘They really don’t!’ Rating: ****

Great Celebrity Bake Off, 8.00pm, C4

Made in Chelsea star Jamie Laing has a huge claim to baking fame – his great-great- grandfather invented the digestive biscuit! Unfortunately, it turns out baking ability isn’t passed on in the genes, and Jamie proves to be more disaster chef than master chef, screaming “it can’t be this hard!” within the first 10 minutes. Jamie’s competition tonight is singer Ella Eyre, politician Ruth Davidson and Matilda composer Tim Minchin. Together they must tackle a loaf cake, a tricksy technical and a breathtaking final showstopper – a celebratory tower of meringue. Who will be responsible for what Paul calls ‘the worst cake that’s ever been baked in the tent’? Rating: *****
