MTV is delving into its archive to launch a search for the greatest music video ever made.

The channel, known as the original home of music video, has compiled an expansive and eclectic list to be put up for a public vote.

MTV’s sister channels, MTV Base, VH1 and MTV TWO have unveiled their respective Top 100 lists, and later this month the Top 10 from each genre will be combined. Viewers will then be allowed to vote for their personal Greatest Video Ever.

Among the contenders are Michael Jackson’s Thriller video and Triumph by the Wu-Tang clan, created by Rush Hour director Brett Ratner.

Also up for the title are Daft Punk’s Around The World and Madonna’s controversial Like A Prayer video. The video attracted criticism on its release for its use of religious imagery, with the singer filmed alongside burning crosses and statues crying blood.

The public vote begins at 10pm on August 17. Log on to MTV
