Stephen Mangan is not unfamiliar with black comedy – his break-out performance as Guy in Green Wing often strayed on the wrong side of good taste.
So playing a reformed alcoholic whose sober new path causes more destruction than his alcohol abuse ever did seems right up his path.
Stephen, 35, plays Keith in Never Better (BBC2, Thurs, January 10, 10pm) – billed by producers as ‘the wrong person trying to do the right thing’.
At his AA group, he creates chaos, endangering the recovery of his fellow 12-steppers. At home, his wife and two children have to cope with Keith’s new extreme attentiveness and misfiring determination to be a good dad and husband.
