Dependable and loyal, Sarah Jane was trusty sidekick to the Third and Fourth Doctors between 1973 and 1976.
Sarah Jane joined forces with the Tenth Doctor in 2006 when she helped him to thwart the plans of the evil Kryllitane.
Most recently, Sarah Jane has been fighting aliens on her own in The Sarah Jane Adventures but she'll be teaming up with the Doctor once again towards the end of series four.
Born in Liverpool in 1948, Elisabeth appeared in episodes of Coronation Street, Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em and Z-Cars before landing the role as Doctor Who's assistant Sarah Jane Smith in 1973.
Elisabeth played Sarah Jane for three and a half series alongside John Pertwee as the Third Doctor and Tom Baker as the Fourth. Elisabeth reprised the role on numerous occasions throughout the eighties and nineties.
Elisabeth first appeared in Doctor's new adventures in the 2006 episode School Reunion alongside Tenth Doctor, David Tennant. She was a hit once again and, in 2007, landed her own spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures.
Elisabeth will appear in the final two-part story of series four.
