*Life on Mars last screened in 2007*

After the car accident that mysteriously flung him backwards through time, Detective Inspector Sam Tyler is still stuck in the Seventies as the second and final series of this Emmy-winning drama comes to BBC One.

It's 1973 and DI Tyler (John Simm) is slowly adjusting to his new surroundings, but his by-the-book approach to crimefighting continues to rub boss DCI Gene Hunt (Philip Glenister) up the wrong way.

His bizarre new life began several months earlier when he was knocked unconscious by a car as his girlfriend and colleague, Maya (Archie Panjabi), was kidnapped by a serial killer. When he woke up, he was 30 years in the past, in a macho world of cigarette smoke and gum-chewing, politically incorrect police officers.

The only one of his new colleagues to reach out to him has been WPC Annie Cartwright (Liz White), a rare female face on the team who is trying to prove that she can cut it in a male-dominated station.

Alongside them are old school DS Ray Carling (Dean Andrews) and cheeky DC Chris Skelton (Marshall Lancaster) - and now a new Chief Inspector, Glenn Fletcher (Emmet Brown). Fletcher was Sam's mentor and inspiration in 2006, but now he's a fresh-faced rookie dealing with the racist attitudes of his new colleagues.

As old voices continue to bleed back to him from the present, Sam is still trying to work out how to save Maya - and whether any part of his new life is real or imagined. In the new second series, we will finally discover the truth, but expect a few shocks along the way. The producers have even filmed two alternative endings for the show.

"Some shocking surprises will rock Sam's world - both in 1973 and the present day," says exec producer Claire Parker. "Whatever the audience thinks they know will be challenged..."
