Joe Swash: 'Be yourself and choose your fights'
Joe Swash gives his top tips on how to win I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! ahead of its return to ITV1 on Sunday, November 13.

It’s time for more tears, tantrums and kangaroo testicles as I’m a Celebrity... returns for another helping of jungle hi-jinks.

Ant and Dec will once again oversee proceedings, including the infamous bushtucker trials, as a new batch of brave celebrities heads Down Under, while over on ITV2, 2008 winner Joe Swash, comedian Russell Kane and new girl Laura Whitmore will report on all the behind-the-scenes gossip.

To whet your appetite, TV&Satellite Week magazine asked Swash what advice he would give to this year’s intake on how to be crowned king or queen of the jungle...

Ignore the cameras
If you try too hard to stand out, it looks like you are playing a game. Some people attempt to stamp their authority on the group straight away and show they are funniest, loudest and most famous person there. You’ll have plenty of time to tell people about your life.

Choose your fights
Don’t create controversy for the sake of it. I got involved in some arguments, but only for reasons I thought were valid, such as when people were bullying Timmy Mallett. If you feel there is something you need to get off your chest, or somebody you need to stick up for, then do it.

Be yourself
Try to come across as normal. Last year’s winner, Stacey Solomon, was genuine and down-to-earth, and didn’t try to hurt anybody, whereas my campmate David Van Day was obviously chasing fame. When someone doesn’t realise how good they are, it is charming.

Treat it as an adventure
That is what my mum told me, and it’s what got me through. In my first week I did several bushtucker trials, but you are so bored in there that I found that doing them actually made my life easier. It is all part of the game and, the more you do, the better the experience.

Never think you're going to win
I wasn’t trying to win, but some people go into camp with that mindset. They then find that there are bigger characters there and end up having to fight them to get air time. It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so just try to enjoy it.
