The X Factor: it's rock night!

The nine remaining acts in X Factor 2009 have been performing some classic rock hits as the competition hots up.

And after hitting the headlines this week, all eyes were on twins John and Edward - the last remaining group in the competition - to see what they would deliver.

Despite rumours that the pair were suffering from sore throats and might have to miss out on this week's show, they appeared - to a mix of cheers and boos from the audience - and sang the Queen hit We Will Rock You, accompanied by a troupe of dancers.

Louis gave his act a standing ovation - but the other judges once again appeared at a loss for words.

"I do look forward to seeing you every week," Dannii Minogue told the pair, "but I wouldn't want to listen to you on the radio."

Simon Cowell, meanwhile, praised the twins' tenacity but attacked the performance. "You simply cannot defend that singing," he said to Louis.

Series favourite Danyl Johnson - who survived last week's sing-off - also had a rough ride this week with his rendition of Aerosmith's Don't Want To Miss A Thing. Dannii complained the 27-year-old sang out of tune, while Louis added, "you need to pick yourself up and get back in the race".

Jamie Archer also fell foul of Louis. "I hear that sort of thing in pubs all the time," he said of his rendition of the Primal Scream hit Rocks,, although Simon Cowell was quick to defend his act. "When was the last time you were in a pub, Louis?" he asked.

However there were good reviews for Joe McElderry, Lucie Jones and Stacey Solomon - with the latter winning praise from Simon after he compared her to a "singing candle".

"I was more impressed with you walking, than I was with the singing," he joked, before calling the performance "terrific".

Lloyd Daniels also impressed the judges with his version of Katy Perry's I Kissed A Girl, which Simon described as "a million times better than last week".

But some of the biggest plaudits of the night were saved for Olly, who closed the show with a stunning performance of the Beatles' classic Come Together.

"Olly, I am very very proud of you," Simon told him, while Cheryl added, "You are the one artist that gets better every week. You really impressed me!"

The results will be announced on Sunday evening's show, which will also feature a performance from legendary rockers Bon Jovi.
