X Factor winner McElderry finally tops charts

X Factor 2009 winner Joe McElderry has reached No 1 in the UK charts after missing out on last week's Christmas chart-topper with his debut single.

The 18-year-old entered the charts last week at number two with the song The Climb after being outsold by the Rage Against The Machine track Killing In The Name.

The latter was at the centre of a Facebook campaign to deprive this year's X Factor winner of the Christmas No 1.

This week however McElderry's single - a cover of the Miley Cyrus song - sold 196,000 copies, sending it to the top spot. Rage Against The Machine dropped to number two.

McElderry said he was "so happy" at reaching number one.

"Thank you so much to everyone that has supported me, this had been the best Christmas ever and I want to wish everyone a very happy new year," he said.

In the album charts, Susan Boyle's four-week reign at the top came to an end when her debut I Dreamed A Dream was knocked off the number one spot by the Michael Buble album Crazy Love.
