X Factor's Olly Murs scores chart-topping debut

X Factor star Olly Murs has gone straight to number one in the UK charts with his debut single Please Don't Let Me Go.

The track beat Teenage Dream, the latest song by X Factor guest judge Katy Perry, to the top spot.

Olly, who came second in the 2009 series of the show, is the second contestant from that series to have a number one hit.

The 2009 winner Joe McElderry also topped the charts with his debut single The Climb, although the track was beaten to the Christmas number one spot by Rage Against The Machine's Killing In The Name, following a Facebook campaign. The song eventually reached number one in its second week on release.

Olly told the BBC News website that he puts his popularity down to "the fact that I'm quite confident but I'm also an entertainer.

"I'm the same person in every single performance that I do," he said. "I'm able to showcase my personality in my music so that's probably why people like me.

Olly is the latest in a long line of X Factor runners-up to achieve chart success.

JLS, who finished second to Alexandra Burke in 2008 have scored several chart-topping singles and a number one album, while G4, who were runners-up in the first series, and Rhydian Roberts, who came second in 2007, have both enjoyed success in the album charts.
