A fixture of The Rovers Return, Betty Williams (Betty Driver) should have retired years ago, but there'd be a riot if punters couldn't have her hotpot at dinnertime!

Children Gordon (result of a wartime romance)

1969 Moves into Coronation Street with policeman hubby Cyril to help sister Maggie Clegg run the corner shop, but soon transfers her services to The Rovers.

1974 Cyril dies and Maggie leaves for Zaire. It's revealed that Betty has an illegitimate son, Gordon, who has been raised by Maggie as her own.

1975 Gordon is told the truth and drunkenly blurts it out to everyone in The Rovers.

1982 Suffers a broken arm after a brutal mugging. Shocked when old flame Ted Farrell visits, as he's unwittingly the father of Gordon. Decides not to tell him.

1989 Barman Charlie Bracewell tries to assault her but she fights him off.

1994 Becomes Mayoress of Weatherfield alongside Mayor Alf Roberts after his wife, Audrey, makes a mockery of the job.

1995 Accompanies Alf to get his OBE. Reunites with her first lover Billy Williams and they marry in October.

1997 Billy dies of a heart attack.

1999 Celebrates 30 years of working at The Rovers.

2001 Gets a Lifetime Achievement Award from the brewery.

2002 Has a retirement party and moves in with son in London, but his wife makes her unwelcome and she returns to Weatherfield.

2003 Her home is damaged by fire and Fred Elliott offers her refuge at The Rovers.

2004 Temporarily walks out after a disagreement with fellow barmaid Bev Unwin.

2008 Infuriated by suggestions that her hotpot may be unhealthy when Rovers regular Jerry Morton has a heart attack.

2009 Celebrates 40 years at The Rovers. Sacked by manager Poppy Morales. Reinstated by Steve McDonald.

2010 Is crowned the oldest serving barmaid in Manchester. But when a rival to the title appears, Betty almost kills her when she inadvertently serves her an out-of-date hotpot!

Born in Leicester on 20 May 1920, Betty's family moved to Manchester when she was two. Her mum Nellie forced her into performing as a child and by the time she was 14 years old she had a professional career.
