Transsexual Hayley Cropper (Julie Hesmondhalgh) has overcome people's ignorance and bigotry to become a popular resident in Coronation Street.

1998 Firman's Freezers co-worker Alma Baldwin gets her a job at Underworld. Falls for Roy Cropper. Boss Mike Baldwin discovers she used to be a man called Harold and taunts her. She tells everyone her secret and gets a mixed reaction. Heads to Amsterdam for final stages of her sex-change op. Roy goes after her and declares his love. Op complete, she returns with him to Weatherfield.
1999 Buys Gail Platt's share of café. Roy proposes. Hayley and Roy try to have their relationship blessed in a church ceremony in April, but Les Battersby has called the press and the ceremony takes place in the café. Changes her name by Deed Poll to Cropper. As a first-aider, rescues Audrey Roberts from a burning tent on Bonfire Night.
2000 Becomes godmother to Sarah Platt's daughter Bethany.
2001 Becomes a foster parent with Roy and takes in Fiz Brown, then young Wayne Hayes. 'Kidnaps' Wayne to protect him from his violent stepdad and is caught and remanded in custody. Released when Wayne's mother backs up their story.
2003 Has a difficult time with Roy after Tracy Barlow says she slept with him. The couple agree to 'buy' the resulting baby when Tracy threatens to abort it.
2004 Takes home baby 'Patience' but has to give her back to Tracy when she reveals she never slept with Roy and Steve McDonald is the father.
2006 Does voluntary work with ex-offenders and gives Becky Granger a job at Roy's Rolls.
2007 Finds out she fathered a son, Christian, before her sex change. Becky helps her find him. Christian rejects her and she goes to Africa for a year on a charity project.
2008 Returns to Weatherfield. Tempted to leave again but discovers project leader isn't the honourable man she had become infatuated with.
2009 Works in café but longs for a more fulfilling job. Agrees to be Becky's Matron of Honour at her wedding to Steve McDonald.
2010 Has a rocky time with Roy after his insensitive marriage proposal. Is taken hostage by convict Robbie Sloane and is held captive by Tony Gordon. He eventually releases her after Carla's pleas and Roy proposes properly.
