Craig Charles
Plays Lloyd Mullaney
Craig was born on 11 July 1964 and brought up in Liverpool by his Irish mum, Josephine, and Guyanan dad, Joe, a lorry driver. Craig has two brothers: Emile, also an actor, and Dean.
Craig first made a name for himself as a poet and won The Guardian’s poetry prize when he was just 12. He moved into performance poetry and appeared regularly on TV satire show Saturday Live.
In 1982, he married Liverpool actress Cathy Tyson but the marriage lasted just five years and they divorced in 1989, shortly after Cathy fell pregnant with their son, Jack. Craig had by then turned to acting and went on to star in eight series of hit sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf.
More TV roles followed, including a stint hosting kids show Go Getters, but he was axed in 1994 after a scandal. Falsely accused of a gang rape, he was held for four months on remand but later cleared of all charges.
After his release, Craig went on to play a psychopath in Lynda La Plante drama The Governor and he met his Irish wife Jacqui Jennings while filming in Dublin. The couple married in Mexico in 1999 and have two children – Anna-Jo, born in 1997 and Nellie, born in 2003.
Since the mid-nineties, Craig has worked continuously, fronting radio shows and hosting TV shows including BBC’s Robot Wars and Five’s Jailbreak as well as chat show Funky Bunker. Craig has also released a volume of poetry, No Other Blue, and has plans to write an autobiography.
A year after joining Corrie in 2005, he was hit by another scandal when he was secretly taped taking crack cocaine. Craig was given a suspension from Coronation Street, cleaned up his act, and returned to the show in 2007.
