Born in Walsall, West Midlands on 23 November 1943, Sue's dad was Conservative MP Lord Harmar Nicholls. She almost went to study languages at Oxford, but decided on a life treading the boards instead and auditioned for London drama school RADA.
Sue initially worked in Rep but she joined the cast of popular soap Crossroads in 1964 as Marilyn Gates. She quit the show when her pop record Where Will You Be? did well in the charts. Sue's second single was less successful and she returned to TV, appearing in shows such as The Duchess of Duke Street, The Rise and Fall of Reginald Perrin and kids comedy show Rentaghost as sneezing spirit Miss Popov.
Sue appeared on and off in Coronation Street for six years, until becoming a regular in 1985. Sue is married to actor Mark Eden, who played nasty con-man Alan Bradley in the Street. The couple have been together since 1983 and have homes in Manchester and London. Sue has no children.
