Albert Square hardman Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) made a formidable team with his equally thuggish brother Grant, despite their frequent differences. Has tried to change for the sake of son Ben but, as an alcoholic, often fails to be the ideal father.

1990 Opens a garage with brother Grant.

1991 Buys Queen Vic with Grant and Sharon Watts, Grant's fiancée. Implicated in the death of publican Eddie Royle but later cleared.

1992 Raids a betting shop. Has an affair with Grant's wife Sharon.

1993 Sharon ends the affair. Marries Romanian refugee Nadia Borovac to help her stay in the country. Dates Kathy Beale but has a drunken one-night-stand with Nadia on Christmas Day.

1994 Torches the car lot for Frank Butcher and a cash sum and accidentally kills a tramp. Grant ruins Phil's engagement party to Kathy by playing Sharon's incriminating taped confession of their affair. Grant beats up Phil, putting him in hospital.

1995 Kathy sticks by him and they have a quiet registry office wedding in February.

1996 Kathy gives birth to Phil's son, Ben, in March. Phil feels neglected and starts drinking heavily. Kathy leaves.

1997 Attends AA meetings. Reunited with Kathy but starts an affair with fellow alcoholic Lorna Cartwright. Confesses to Kathy on holiday in Paris and she throws wedding ring into Seine.

1998 Tries to reconcile with Kathy. She leaves him and takes Ben to South Africa. Has a brief relationship with Annie Palmer.

1999 Kathy returns briefly with Ben and sleeps with Grant. Phil drives Grant into the canal during a botched heist in revenge for Grant's disloyalty. Grant leaves for Rio.

2000 Strings along market inspector Lisa Shaw and dumps her when she falls pregnant. Briefly reunites with Lisa until she miscarries. Sleeps with her best mate Mel Healy on Christmas Day.

2001 Goes back on the bottle. Shot by a mystery assailant, who he later realises was Lisa. Despite this, continues an on-off affair with Lisa. She marries Mark Fowler but gives birth to Phil's daughter Louise. Sharon Watts returns and they briefly date.

2002 Forces Lisa to leave Mark then cruelly dumps her. Lisa goes on the run with Louise. Phil disappears and returns with Louise but without Lisa and is suspected of murder. Meets kindly Kate Morton at the hospital after nephew Jamie dies in a road accident.

2003 Dates Kate, who turns out to be an undercover cop investigating Lisa's disappearance. Kate falls for Phil and quits the Force to marry him. Lisa turns up on their wedding day and later attempts to shoot him but bottles it. Phil's business rival Den Watts sets him up on an armed robbery and he's arrested but escapes and goes on the run.

2005 Returns, still on the run. He's arrested and taken to court but the witness is paid off and the case collapses. Gets involved in a feud with gangster Johnny Allen that results in the death of Dennis Rickman.

2006 Son Ben comes to live in Walford after Kathy dies in a car crash. Dates his lawyer Stella.

2007 Saves Peter Beale's life. Proposes to Stella but on their wedding day Ben reveals that Stella has been physically and mentally abusing him. Stella commits suicide. Phil falls off the wagon but regains his sobriety for the sake of his son.

2008 Jack Branning finds Phil's daughter Louise. After meeting her, he decides she's better off where she is. Moves out of the Vic with Ben and lives with new girlfriend Suzy Branning, another nutter. Sleeps with Shirley Carter. Stays with Suzy but she lies about being pregnant and he finishes with her on Christmas Day.

2009 Doesn't kill Archie as mum Peggy asks; she throws Phil out. Tells Peggy she's the reason he drinks. Confronts his demons. Has an affair with Dawn Swann. Brings Sam Mitchell back to Walford.

Dec 2009 Becomes a suspect in the murder of Archie, but Shirley gives him an alibi. Soon moves her into the Vic.

March 2010 Daughter Louise turns up looking for him and a social worker recommends that she stays with her father.

May 2010 Discovers that Ben has been harming Louise and hits him. Then learns Ben attacked Jordan with a spanner, almost killing him. Tries to cover up his son's attack.

July 2010 Decides to run away with his kids rather thna let Ben go to prison, but Peggy stops him. Watches helplessly as Ben is sentence to five month's detention.

Aug 2010 Realises Louise has run away with Lisa. Becomes addicted to crack cocaine when his life is looking hopeless.

Sept 2010 Peggy locks him in the living room in an attempt to get him off drugs. After a massive confrontation with Peggy he sets fire to the Vic and almost dies when he is trapped in the inferno.

Nov 2010 Begins a clandestine affair with Glenda when she accuses him, correctly, of stealing the remainder of Ronnie's inheritance.
