A few sheep short of a flock, Sam Dingle (James Hooton) is easily led astray but his family do their best to keep him and his son safe.

1995 Zak Dingle's son first appears in February on release from a Young Offenders Institution and Eric Pollard takes him on as a dogsbody. Sees a moneymaking opportunity when young Robert Sugden goes missing and demands £5000 ransom from his family. Gets a suspended sentence.
1996 Sent to his mum in Ireland to dodge a prison sentence for theft.
2000 Returns for Butch Dingle's funeral. Arrested on suspicion of armed robbery and flees to Ireland again.
2001 Returns to discover Cain Dingle is his half-brother.
2002 Village in Bloom contest becomes Village in Boom when Sam accidentally causes explosion.
2003 Jailed for hit-and-run in which he nearly killed Edna Birch.
2004 Meets chicken farmer Alice Wilson in December.
2005 Moves away with Alice to farm in Norfolk. Moves back to Emmerdale when Alice falls pregnant. Discovers Alice has cancer.
2006 Son Samson is born. Marries Alice after learning her cancer is terminal. In July, Sam helps Alice die, as she requests, with Cain's help.
2008 Gets involved in one of Eli Dingle's illegal money-making schemes and is arrested in possession of cannabis. Struggles to care for Samson and moves in with Dingle clan. Burns down Eric's factory, thinking Eric wants the insurance money (he doesn't). Falls for Jo Sugden and is beaten by her abusive husband, Andy.
2009 Loses job when Eric Pollard goes out of business.
