Kym Marsh backs the Hollyoaks 'cull'

Coronation Street star Kym Marsh has backed the spate of axings on rival soap Hollyoaks.

The actress, who plays feisty barmaid Michelle Connor, said the decision by new producer Paul Marquess to get rid of a string of characters could prove beneficial to the show.

Kym, whose fiance Jamie Lomas used to star in the Chester-based rival soap, wrote in her New! magazine column: "The cull could be good - the show's not been in very good shape for a while."

She went on: "They tried to make it like Skins, but it's on too early to compete."

Kym also wrote in support of Hollyoaks star Nico Mirallegro, who is leaving his role as Barry 'Newt' Newton on the teen soap.

"I wanted to clear up a newspaper report that said Nico Mirallegro, who plays Newt in Hollyoaks, is one of many cast members to be axed. He's a friend of Jamie's and I know he decided to leave some time ago. Saying he's been sacked could tarnish his career."
