Gemma was born in 1984 and grew up in Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire. She studied at the Manchester School of Acting before winning the role of Carmel and while she was at college, she worked as a make-up artist.
Gemma house-shares in Liverpool with on-screen sister Jennifer Metcalfe, who plays Mercedes.
