Stephen was born in 1982 and grew up in Birkby near Huddersfield in West Yorkshire before moving to Middlesbrough to study English at the University of Teesside when he was 18.
After university Stephen trained in acting at the Arts Educational School in London and appeared in theatre, including roles on the West End Stage in My Beautiful Laundrette and The History Boys.
