Ian's determined to find life after Harold Bishop

After almost two decades of playing Harold Bishop, Ian Smith finally quit Neighbours this year, with Harold departing Ramsay Street to be with granddaughter Sky in Queensland.

"The fire had gone out. I always said that if that happened, I’d go," says Ian, who turns 70 in June. "I had to keep my promise to myself and to the show, because I’m still very fond of the show – I still watch it."

So now, after years of early-morning starts and long hours on set, the star is enjoying some well-earned quiet time and, after his milestone birthday, he plans to follow in Harold’s footsteps and hit the road with his wife, Jean, to travel across Australia and see his homeland up close and personal.

"We’ve already got the car – a four-wheel drive. We want to go all around Australia, pull up if there’s a motel or caravan park, and just do nothing."
